Fix subtitle timing

Subtitles early or late? Open the .srt, move it by the seconds it's off, and save the fixed file. If it starts right and drifts later, match two lines instead. It all happens in your browser, and the file never leaves your computer.

How it's off
seconds. A minus shows them earlier.

Why subtitles are off

A subtitle made for a different version of the film is off in one of two ways. A different cut, studio logo or recap at the start moves every line by the same amount, so move it by that much. A different frame rate makes the gap grow as the film goes on: a subtitle timed for 25 frames a second runs about 4% fast on a 23.976 film, so a line an hour in is two and a half minutes off. Matching two lines fixes both at once.

Using it in Plex

Save the file next to the film with the same name and a language code, like Heat (1995).en.srt, and Plex lists it in the subtitle menu on every device. If Plex already had the old file, pick the subtitle again after saving.

Or never fix one by hand

StreamBridge Pro does this for every film in Plex. It finds the subtitle made for the release you're streaming, compares a short sample of the film's audio with it, and shifts or stretches it to match the dialogue. How it works →
